Driving a car is one of the most risky activities we take part in regularly. Bevan Insurance wants you to protect yourself and your passengers by ensuring that all people traveling in your vehicle, young and old, always wear their seatbelts.
Wearing your seatbelt is the law and you can incur significant fines as well as lose demerit points on your license if you fail to comply with such guidelines. You can also be fined for broken seatbelts within your vehicle. The exception to this is passengers over aged 16 as they can be subjected to the fines themselves.
Transport Canada have reported the Canadian Motor Vehicle Traffic Collision Statistics in 2014, the most recent published, the year saw a decrease in the number of fatalities, serious injuries and total injuries in vehicle collisions; the lowest since they began collecting data in the 1970s. While this is fantastic, we must all do our part to see that these fatalities and injuries decrease further as we take necessary precautions to stay safe on the road.
Buckling up can prevent your face or head hitting the windshield and your being ejected from your vehicle in the case of collision. Seatbelts are notorious for being the number one vehicle safety device, despite all of the recent technological advances in vehicles.
The Canadian Safety Council (CSC) has pointed out that there are two primary causes of collisions: inattention and distraction. Hand held phones, radios, eating, drinking and GPS devices represent some of those distractions we can find ourselves disrupted by when we are driving.
Road crashes are one of the lead causes of death for young people in Canada and the CSC has pointed out that the combination of distractions and not wearing seatbelts answer for the young being over represented in vehicular injury and death.
We must do all do our part to ensure we drive safely, working to prevent accident and injury, or worse: death.
