The new school year is now well underway; with that comes a new cohort of youth reaching driving age.  The open road provides a sense of freedom though it should also trigger a feeling of great responsibility.  After all, a vehicle can be a dangerous weapon if not handled properly.

Ontario’s Ministry of Transport argues that ‘driving is a privilege and not a right.’  Being well prepared is the best way forward to becoming a conscientious driver that respects the rules of the road while sharing the space with other motorists.  They have published an official MTO Driver’s Handbook which acts as a guide to support your teen in familiarizing themselves with the requirements of drivers on Ontario’s streets and highways.

You care about your children and you care about your vehicle.  Protecting them both can worry even the most relaxed parent.  Signing your son or daughter up for driving lessons, both in class and on the road, can really help prepare them for their lifetime of safety in getting from Point A to Point B.

When choosing the driver training course to suit your needs, consider having a chat with your car insurance broker to find out about how it can actually lower the cost of adding your child as an occasional driver to your auto insurance policy.  Driver training can also shorten the compulsory time between taking one’s G1 and G2 tests.

Be sure your teen driver considers the following:

  • The G1 rules mean your teen must drive with zero blood alcohol level and that there must be a fully licensed driver with a minimum of 4 years’ experience in the passenger seat. The latter could affect yours directly!
  • The G2 rules mean your teen must continue to drive with zero blood alcohol level. Between the hours of midnight and 5:00 am one is not allowed to travel with more than one passenger under the age of 19 for the first 6 months; after 6 months they are permitted to have up to three passengers under the age of 19 thereafter.
  • Young drivers are considered to be of higher risk due to their inexperience. So gaining a safe driving experience is critical to maintaining an accident-free driving record and improve one’s car insurance policy rate over time.
