House flooding can mean structural damage, property damage and health risks for you and your loved ones. The arduous process of cleaning up such damage is distressing enough without concerns regarding your Flood Insurance or Sewer Back-up Insurance coverage.
Bevan Insurance wants you to avoid the headache of worrying about sewer back-up and flooding coverage after the fact. Be proactive and find out if your home or rented property is insured.
The 2013 floods in the Calgary and Toronto areas served as a wake-up call for many Canadians. The Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC) referred to the latter flood as ‘Ontario’s most costly natural disaster’.
The insurance industry responded and from 2015, overland water protection became a reality for many residential property owners and tenants across Canada. According to Aviva Canada, this was put in place as an endorsement to personal property insurance policies that already had sewer back-up protection in place.
What is the difference? Sewer back-up happens when sewer water enters your home through pipes and drains, one cause of which includes clogged drains. Flooding, however, is a natural occurrence resulting from heavy rainfall, melting snow or the overflow of a river.
The Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation as well as the Sump and Sewage Pump Manufacturers Association agree that ‘insurance that fully covers basement flooding damage is an important means of financial protection to home owners’
The IBC suggests some additional ways to be prepared for water related damage:
- Keep a current and detailed home inventory.
- If your neighbourhood is prone to flooding, find out about precautions to take.
- Assemble a disaster safety kit.
- Create a 72-hour emergency preparedness plan for your family.
